State Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Dijana Hrkalović, said today at the EU-Western Balkans Ministerial Forum in Sofia that prevention and the fight against terrorism are one of the priorities of the Republic of Serbia in order to ensure lasting global and regional stability and suppression of security threats.
“Serbia recognizes terrorism as a threat to the basic values on which it rests as a threat to international peace and security of the international community. I want to inform you that Serbia has adopted the National Strategy and the Action Plan for the Prevention and Fight against Terrorism, modeled to prevent, protect and monitor-respond, “said Hrkalović, addressing the Forum in Sofia.
She reminded that Serbia, as one of the co-sponsors of UN Resolution 2178, is determined to respond to the challenge of combating terrorism and all forms of extremism and radicalism, as well as contributing to the Global Coalition in the fight against ISIS.
Speaking about the fight against possession, storage and sale of illegal firearms and ammunition, as one of the important segments of the fight against terrorism, Hrkalović pointed out that until now, in Serbia, a total of 101,728 weapons and 160,434 pieces of ammunition have been destroyed, thus our country positioned as a regional leader in the fight against organized crime.
Among other things, as evidence of dedication, the fact that members of the Ministry of Interior participated in two international campaigns led by Europol – “Balkan Trigger” and “Blue amber vulcan” – in which Serbia recorded the best result of all countries in the region Western Balkans.
Hrkalović also talked about the topic of migration at the Sofia Ministerial Forum, recalling that Serbia’s role during the migration crisis is very well evaluated by both regional and international partners.
“From the beginning of the crisis, we believed in a common solution to the problem, and we remain in that position today. Serbia is ready to be part of a joint solution to the problem of a migrant crisis, together with the European Union and the member states, and in that regard, I expect that during the Bulgarian presidency, there will be a settlement of attitudes on this issue, “said Hrkalović.
She emphasized that at this moment the most important thing is to prevent organized smuggling of people, which is why Serbia is extremely dedicated.
“Criminal judgments against 38 people for the smuggling of 613 people have been passed and the total prison sentence of 56 years and two months has been imposed, with the seizure of a large amount of money, more passenger cars and mobile phones. Strengthening our operational capacities, we have established a permanent Attack Group in the field of combating human smuggling and there are already serious work results – the arrest of 11 suspects for the smuggling of more than 250 illegal migrants, “concluded Hrkalović.
